Job Description

Project Title: "Legal and Linguistic Support Project for the Turkish Cypriot community"

General description of the position:

  • The Contractor should designate a Team Leader/ Linguist who will be fully responsible for the implementation of all deliverables (all outputs under the contract) as well as full quality control envisaged under this contract.
  • The Team Leader will report to the Programme Manager of the Contracting Authority;
  • S/he will be responsible for organising, coordinating and managing the work of the team and will carry out the following tasks: o Manage the inputs of key and non-key experts, according to the work plan and the training programme (s) o Organise and implement the delivery of all the project inputs in timely and effective manner and respecting ToR and EU procedures;
  • Substantially contribute to needs assessment of the linguists ( translators & interpreters) in the Turkish Cypriot community o Attend relevant meetings relating to the implementation of the contract o Initiate and guide formation of a formation of a local professional organisation for linguists o Substantially contribute to developing the communication & visibility plan aiming to reaching out to wider target group of translators/interpreters.

Expert category:

  • Cat. II (>6 years of experience);

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Relevant Master’s Degree (i.e. Linguistics, Translation/Interpretation or in directly related discipline) or, in its absence, minimum 15 years of equivalent professional experience in addition to the general professional experience duration fixed below;
  • Good communication, interpersonal skills, strong leadership, organisational and reporting skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure within complex institutional and organisational settings;
  • Full computer literacy;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken Turkish and English;
  • AIIC Membership.

General professional experience:

  • At least 6 years of work experience in managing, planning, monitoring or implementing capacity building projects and/or training projects.
  • Knowledge of cultural and linguistic characteristics of Turkish Cypriot community acquired through at least two assignments in TCc.
  • Experience with European Union funded projects acquired through at least two assignments;
  • Active membership and experience in leadership positions of a professional organisation in the linguistics sector at least for one year.

Specific professional experience:

  • S/he should have minimum 3 years of experience in working at senior level as a translator/interpreter and a trainer in international settings for an International/Intergovernmental Organisation;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the sensitivities in post-conflict regions through at least one assignment in a postconflict or country in conflict and in multi-cultural environments to prove her/his capacity to quickly understand complex socio-economic and political structures such as those of the northern part of Cyprus will be an asset.

Language skills:

  • Excellent command of written and spoken Turkish and English.
